Experience. Education is important but nothing beats experience when it comes to carpet repair.
I have in the carpet industry for over 25 years and I still enjoy the challenge of repairing carpets but more than that I enjoy solving peoples problems regarding there 3rd highest priced purchase after there home and vehicles, their flooring.
I walk into homes everyday that have had someone do a repair on carpet and they have ruined someones carpet due to the lack of experience. I can usually improve the situation but if I was called or someone that has at least 4 years experience to repair the carpet from the start we can make the carpet repair look like it was never there.

If I cant get out a stain with cleaning 99% of the time it can be patched. I can also take carpet from a closet to patch a defect but can never match the carpet perfectly so having the same dye lot is huge.
Also understanding how to re-stretch a home with ripples, buckles or tripping hazards is something that comes with experience. A lot of the cost is in moving the furniture so if you can empty a room of most of its furniture it will bring down costs dramatically.
